Some of the most cherished headstones at Canberra’s oldest church were smashed and destroyed by vandals overnight.

More than a dozen headstones at St John's Church in Reid have been vandalised, leaving members of the community devastated.

St John’s rector Paul Black, who lives just metres from the graveyard at the site, said he heard nothing from the time he left the church at 6pm last night to the time he arrived at 8am this morning.

"Something of Canberra was lost here last night," he said.

"I've been here 3.5 years and we had a little bit of damage done to one gravestone in my time here, but certainly I don’t think we've experienced anything like this."
