real ghost stories based on real research from true believers™

I was wondering if anyone had any more information on the location or name of the cemetery that was destroyed by a greedy farmer in Boone County last week. I saw the story on WISH TV and was totallly appalled by the landowners attitude. I've been documenting these cemeteries as well as investigating for the last several years and wonder if it's one I've done. The article doesn't mention the name or exact location. Just north-eastern Boone County. If anyone has any more information please let me know as DNR is investigating the destruction and I may have photo's that could help their case. Below is a link to the story that aired. Thanks.

Bodean - I have a contact at the DNR I can ask. She works or used to work in the cemetery preservation team/group/function. I'll ask - Michael

Hey thanks Michael! This kind of crap is just totally unacceptable. As the article stated it was a cemetery started in 1830. That makes it one of the earliest cemeteries in Boone County. I don't believe Boone County was even a county until 1834. The farmer claims ignorance to the existance of the burials yet I've been told there were stones visible and even a memorial plaque on one of the tree's that was only from 2006. So it sounds like this wasn't just some forgotten cemetery deep in the woods. I'm just trying to do my part to make sure this guy is prosecuted for his crime.

Hey, my contact at the DNR was going to talk to the state archeologist and see what's what. She assumes the county prosecutor is handling it. She didn't give me the name/location of the cemetery yet. I'll keep u posted

I found out from a contact at WISH TV that the cemetery was located a little north-west of the intersection of 900N and 900E. It was in a ring of trees near the corner of a field behind some railroad tracks and a creek. They didn't have a name for it but said there were dozens of burials there. I haven't found that location documented in any of my maps or resources. A real shame. I'm sure there are hundreds of these forgotten cemeteries out there that need to be protected.

Stoker Ditch runs parallel to the old Monon Rail Line precisely at that point. There's no record of a cemetery there in the USGS topographic quad, and I can't see anything that stands out on satellite imaging. Cox Ditch runs parallel to the Monon Line southeast of where 900N T's into 900E, but there is no cemetery indicated there by USGS, and nothing that stands out on satellite. Sadly, it is yet another casualty of history, and the memories of those who went before us, to the utilitarian agenda of one person. Perhaps it is some consolation that the spirits will remain, in spite of anything. ~Bryan~
