It seems to me that Western Culture is in the midst of a contemporary counterpart to the popularity of Spiritualism during the Victorian Period. Paranormal material is proliferating on television, the internet is teeming with it, and more people are admitting to belief in the paranormal now than at any time during the 20th century. It could be that possessions have been misdiagnosed as mental illnesses, and with widespread public acceptance of the paranormal as a reality, The Catholic Church is becoming more able to step up to the plate. It is interesting that The Church, long at odds with various schools of science, has made it a policy in the past to allow science the first say in matters of possession and exorcism. Did they really believe those people were mentally ill, or was it a means of remaining within popular parameters of acceptance? It is rather contradictory to contest Darwin's Theory on one hand, but to give medical science free reign in declaring that any given condition is NOT demonic possession.
